In-depth guide to Sports Injuries & Recovery

Athlete receiving chiropractic recovery work in a training environment

Athletic care is one of the most rewarding parts of the practice. Athletes are the ideal chiropractic patients — they understand the body, they pay attention to signal, they do their homework between visits, and they care about outcomes. At our Ontario, CA clinic, Dr. Sam Sangha treats athletes from across Southern California, from collegiate and semi-pro competitors to weekend warriors and active retirees, with the same focused, individualized care that has made the practice a destination for performance-minded patients.

Athletic injuries fall into a few broad categories. Acute injuries — sprains, strains, contusions, joint dislocations, post-impact dysfunction — require careful early management to prevent the development of chronic compensation patterns. Overuse injuries — tendinopathies, stress reactions, repetitive joint irritation — usually have an underlying biomechanical cause that has to be identified and corrected, not just rested. And cumulative training load from sport-specific demands gradually creates restrictions and asymmetries that, left unaddressed, eventually limit performance and lead to breakdown. Dr. Sam handles all three.

The treatment approach is fundamentally the same as for non-athletes — full-body assessment, identification of root cause, targeted adjustment, and rehabilitative guidance — but the standard is higher and the timeline is faster. Athletes cannot afford to lose a season to a problem that should have been caught and corrected in two weeks. They also cannot afford to be patched together with passive care that does not address why the injury happened in the first place. Every athletic case includes a clear discussion of what went wrong, what we are doing to fix it, and what the athlete needs to change in their training, mobility work, or sleep to keep it from coming back.

Sport-specific patterns are addressed directly. Boxers and combat athletes get particular attention to cervical and thoracic mobility for head movement and rotational power. Runners get gait analysis, hip and ankle mobility work, and pelvic alignment. Lifters get evaluation of squat, deadlift, and overhead pressing patterns along with the spinal and hip mechanics that support them. Soccer and basketball players get extensive lower-extremity work focused on hip mobility, ankle stability, and the rotational demands of cutting and jumping. Jiu-jitsu and grappling athletes get full-spine and shoulder care to keep them on the mat.

Recovery between training sessions is one of the highest-leverage uses of chiropractic care for serious athletes. A regular full-body adjustment cycle keeps the spine and major joints moving freely under accumulating training load, reduces the muscular guarding that follows hard sessions, and helps the autonomic nervous system shift more quickly into parasympathetic recovery mode. Many of our athlete patients report measurable improvements in sleep quality, perceived recovery, and the ability to handle higher training volumes without breaking down.

Post-injury rehabilitation deserves a careful, staged approach. After an acute injury, the priorities are inflammation control, restoration of pain-free range of motion, gradual reintroduction of load, and progressive return to sport-specific demands. Dr. Sam works in coordination with physical therapists, athletic trainers, sports medicine physicians, and coaches when needed, recognizing that the best outcomes come from a coordinated team rather than any single provider. Communication with referring providers is direct and prompt.

Performance optimization is a separate conversation from injury care. Many athletes come in not because something hurts but because they have hit a plateau in their training, are dealing with persistent low-grade restrictions that are limiting performance, or want to extend their competitive career. For these athletes, the work focuses on identifying and clearing the specific limiting restrictions, optimizing breathing and bracing patterns, and developing the kind of body awareness that prevents future injury.

Athletes travel to the clinic from across the Inland Empire and surrounding regions — Ontario, Rancho Cucamonga, Chino, Chino Hills, Upland, Fontana, Eastvale, Corona, Riverside, Pomona, and beyond, as well as from Los Angeles, Orange County, and the South Bay. Same-day appointments are often available for acute injuries. New patient evaluations are $300; follow-ups are $200. If you train hard and want a chiropractor who actually understands what your sport demands of your body, the door is open.

Athletes need a clinician who understands both the demands of their sport and the timeline of competition. Dr. Sam works with high-school athletes, collegiate competitors, weekend warriors, and Crossfit, jiu-jitsu, and powerlifting communities across the Inland Empire. Care plans are built around training cycles, not arbitrary visit packages — pre-meet tune-ups, in-season maintenance, and aggressive post-injury work when the calendar demands a fast return.

To book a sports-injury session, call (909) 529-1179 — mention your sport, the injury, and any upcoming competition dates so the schedule can prioritize you appropriately. Bring training shoes and athletic wear. The clinic is at 1155 S. Milliken Ave, Suite J, Ontario, CA 91761 with free parking and direct access from the 10, 60, 15, and 71 freeways. New-patient evaluation is $300 (includes first treatment), follow-ups $200, with cash, debit, credit, and HSA/FSA accepted.
